Wow, the weather has definitely change between fall/winter with lows around 32 degrees with highs around 90 degrees. The temperature is different and we have the flu ever changing. These are just more reasons why we need to make sure we are taking care of our immune systems. We have our immune system to protect us. It is essential for our survival. Without an immune system, our bodies would be open to attack from bacteria, viruses, parasites, and more. It is a vast network of cells and tissues that are constantly on the lookout for invaders. The immune system is spread throughout the body and involves many types of cells, organs, proteins, and tissues that have a complex attack when, for example, a bacterium, virus, or parasite is present.

Our immune systems become stronger during adulthood because we have been exposed to more pathogens and develop more immunity. This is why teens and adults tend to get sick less often than children. Our bodies will produce a antibody, and a copy remains in our bodies so that if the same antigen appears again, it can be conquered quickly. We are all born with some level of immunity to invades. The innate immunity includes the external barriers of our body which are skin, and mucous membranes of the throat and gut. As we go through life, we are exposed to diseases or get vaccinated, we build up a library of antibodies to different pathogens. This is our immunological memory. For example, babies receive antibodies from their moms through the placenta before birth and in breast milk following birth. This passive immunity protects the baby from some infections during the early years of their life. Immunization brings in antigens or weakened pathogens to a person in such a way that the individual does not become sick but still produces antibodies. Since the body copies the antibodies, it is protected if the threat should reappear later in life.

Here are ways to maintain your immune system by using healthy living strategies that will benefit your entire body. Make sure you are doing these: Eating fruits and vegetables Exercising regularly Keep a healthy weight No smoking Drink alcohol in moderation Getting enough sleep Wash your hands Reduce your stress Get your Vitamins A, C, D, zinc, and minerals
