Who Are You?

This is a great question that I ask myself and my clients. Why? The answer to this question shows me your character. So what is character? Merriam Webster Dictionary has multiple definitions for this word. He are a few that I found:

-One of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual. -Person marked by notable or conspicuous traits

-Moral excellence and firmness

All are great definitions of character.

So how does this play out in everyday life?

Well, let say that you are on a fitness journey and you have been following your required food intake, rest/recovery, and workout routine. Then you have a vacation that comes around and you completely let yourself go and indulge in unhealthy practices. Your character is what must remain in place in order for you to stay focused on your fitness journey. In the example I shared, your moral regard has been neglected allowing you to do the opposite of what you know is right on your weight loss journey. There were ways that you could have prepared for your vacation and still stayed on course for your success. You did not have to let yourself go.

What you do when no one is watching is also part of your character. If you are working with a fitness coach, for example, and you are supposed to do 20 minutes of walking at work during your lunch hour, but you skip it, then tell your coach you did it, you have a character issue.

Based on the definition, you have attributes that distinguish you and covering the truth with a lie is hurtful to you and the other person involved.

As a person of faith, I understand the importance of character and the ability for each of us to improve it daily. I am far from perfect and am constantly learning. I am a work in progress and I want to leave you with this. Your character is something you are able to control. It is influenced by our actions and decisions so we can do things our way or do things God's way. We can include love, joy, self-control, gentleness, faithfulness, and kindness as part of our character.

In Titus 2:11-14 the word says that we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world. By His grace He continues to shape us to be more Christ-like and reflect His glory in our lives. I understand it is not easy, but there is help available. Make sure you do your best daily to develop your character in a positive manner!

Yours Truly,

Coach James Henderson
