Everyday you have the opportunity to move closer to your goals. Everyday you have the opportunity to grow. Have you ever thought about your response to feedback? When I refer to feedback, I am referring to constructive criticism.
What is your response?
Do you get upset? Do you get defensive? Do you try to justify your behavior? Do you welcome it? Do you reject it and totally shut down? Do you respect it? Do you grow from it?
I have been subjected to criticism for a long time and I have learned to respect it especially if I know it is coming from a person that is looking out for my best interest. The delivery of the message does have an effect on the person receiving it. However, if the person does not take any criticism it does not matter how sweet, loving, and kind the message is delivered. The message will be tuned out and that person will not change or at least take a look at the validity of the criticism. For example, have you ever had to share something with a person who refuses to hear it from you, but will take the same message from a supervisor or manager? Have you ever pointed out something and the person gets upset at you, yet when another person points out the same thing he/she is open to it?
I deal with this as a coach when I share information that will help a person change his or her behavior. The purpose of having a coach is to help you attain a certain level of success in an area of your life.
In your life, have you ever had to share information or receive information that was not pleasing to you or the other party? Did it kill you or did it make your stronger? As adults, we have the opportunity to build each other up. Too many people are tearing each other down and everyday we have the opportunity to do the opposite.
So the next time you receive some constructive criticism or have to deliver it, make sure you are coming from a place of peace and love so that you can really help.
"Every human being is entitled to courtesy and consideration. Constructive criticism is not only to be expected but sought." - Margaret Chase Smith
"I didn't take constructive criticism the way I should have. When I finally caught up to that, that's when I went to being the MVP." - Allen Iverson
"Working at Pixar you learn the really honest, hard way of making a great movie, which is to surround yourself with people who are much smarter than you, much more talented than you, and incite constructive criticism; you'll get a much better movie out of it." - Andrew Stanton
