What does this word mean to you? Merriam-Webster's Dictionary defines it as the act or process of nourishing; the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances. To me, this word is all about energy or fuel for my body. There are so many nutrients that help our bodies grow, and repair cells on a daily basis. Not having the proper amounts of quality nutrients will delay the repair process for all the cells that keep you functioning. This is a big deal. You are asking your body to perform on a daily basis so why would you not provide the best nutrients for it? Today, let's look at eating out. This is part of our busy lives and as long as you are not eating too much, it is possible to go out and enjoy yourself while staying healthy. If you know how to pick the right foods, and the right portions of foods, you can eat at almost any restaurant. Portion size plays a big role in how many calories you consume. Take for example a buffet. It is easy to over eat here so plan ahead. Make sure you check out the menu online so you can make healthy choices ahead of time. Avoid eating out when you are very hungry. Eat a small healthy snack, such as carrots or a small apple, shortly before going out. Choose:
Choose salads and other vegetable side dishes
Foods that are broiled, grilled, steamed, roasted, or baked
Chicken, turkey, seafood, or lean meats
Use Once In A While:
Creamy, fried, crispy, breaded, or battered foods
Sauces or soups with lots of butter, cream, or cheese
Thick or creamy salad dressings
Calorie Saving:
A good way to save yourself some calories, split a meal with someone or ask for a take out box and put half of your meal away for later
Order lunch size servings if possible
Start with a small salad or broth based soup as an appetizer
Drink water instead of empty calories, such as sodas
Limit alcohol with meals
Limit your dessert or split it with someone
Choose places that broils or grills hamburgers, fish, and chicken
Have your sandwich without mayo or special sauce
Order a salad instead of French fries
With pizza, limit yourself to 1 or 2 slices and have a big salad with it
